Marathon Oil: Inside The Numbers

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

Determining a company's financial health is a very important step in making a decision on whether or not to invest or to stay invested. There are many different ways to compute a company's financial health. In this test, I will be considering Marathon Oil Corporation's (MRO) profitability, debt and capital, and operating efficiency. Based on these criteria, we get to see sales, returns, margins, liabilities, assets, returns, and turnovers.

Note: All numbers sourced from the company website.

Profitability

Profitability is a class of financial metrics that are used to assess a business's ability to generate earnings, compared with expenses and other relevant costs incurred during a specific period of time.

In this section, we will look at four tests of profitability. They are: Net Income, Operating Cash Flow, Return on Assets, and Quality of Earnings. From these four metrics, we will establish if the company is making money, and gauge the quality of the reported profits.

  1. Net Income 2011 = $2.946 billion

To pass, the company needs to have a positive net income. Marathon Oil passes.

  1. Operating Cash Flow 2011 = $4.813 billion

Operating Cash Flow is the cash generated from the operations of a company, generally defined as revenue less all operating expenses, but calculated through a series of adjustments to net income.

To pass, the company needs to have a positive operating cash flow. Marathon Oil passes.

  1. ROA - Return On Assets

ROA is an indicator of how profitable a company is relative to its total assets. ROA gives an idea as to how efficient management is at using its assets to generate earnings. Calculated by dividing a company's net income by its total assets, ROA is displayed as a percentage. Sometimes this is referred to as "return on investment."

  • ROA in 2010 = 5.13%

  • ROA in 2011 = 9.39%

  • Net income growth, 2010 = $2.568 billion to 2011 = $2.946 billion, a increase of 14.72%

  • Total Asset growth, 2010 = $50.014 billion to 2011 = $31.371 billion, an decrease of 37.28%

In 2010-11, Marathon Oil's ROA increased from 5.13% to 9.39%. As the ROA increased, Marathon Oil passes.

  1. Quality of Earnings

Quality of Earnings is the amount of earnings attributable to higher sales or lower costs rather than artificial profits created by accounting anomalies such as inflation of inventory.

To pass, the operating cash flow must exceed the net income. Marathon Oil passes, as operating cash flow exceeds net income.

Debt and Capital

The Debt and Capital section establishes if the company is sinking into debt or digging its way out. It will also determine if the company is growing organically or raising cash by selling off stock.

  1. Total Liabilities to Total Assets, or TL/A ratio

TL/A ratio is a metric used to measure a company's financial risk by determining how much of the company's assets have been financed by debt.

  • Total Assets - 2010 = $50.014 billion

  • Total Assets - 2011 = $31.371 billion

  • Equals an decrease of 37.28%

  • Total Liabilities 2010 = $26.243 billion

  • Total liabilities 2011 = $14.219 billion

  • Equals an decrease of 45.81%

Marathon Oil's decrease in total assets was less the percentage decrease of total liabilities. Total assets decreased by 37.28%, while the total liabilities decreased by 45.81%. As the total liabilities decreased more than the total assets, Marathon Oil passes.

  1. Working Capital

Working Capital is a general and quick measure of liquidity of a firm. It represents the margin of safety or cushion available to the creditors. It is an index of the firm's financial stability. It is also an index of technical solvency and an index of the strength of working capital.

Marathon Oil's current ratio dropped from 1.24 in 2010 to 0.73 in 2011. As Marathon Oil's current ratio decreased, Marathon Oil does not pass.

  1. Shares Outstanding

To pass, the company's shares must increase less than by 2%. Marathon Oil's shares increased by 0.28%. Marathon Oil passes.

Operating Efficiency

Operating Efficiency is a market condition that exists when participants can execute transactions and receive services at a price that equates fairly to the actual costs required to provide them. An operationally efficient market allows investors to make transactions that move the market further toward the overall goal of prudent capital allocation without being chiseled down by excessive frictional costs, which would reduce the risk/reward profile of the transaction.

  1. Gross Margin: Gross Income/Sales

The gross profit margin is a measurement of a company's manufacturing and distribution efficiency during the production process. The gross profit tells an investor the percentage of revenue/sales left after subtracting the cost of goods sold. A company that boasts a higher gross profit margin than its competitors and industry is more efficient. Investors tend to pay more for businesses that have higher efficiency ratings than their competitors, as these businesses should be able to make a decent profit as long as overhead costs are controlled (overhead refers to rent, utilities, etc.).

  • Gross Margin 2010 = $4.786 billion/ $12.873 billion = 31.18%
  • Gross Margin 2011 = $6.225 billion/ $15.282 billion = 40.73%

The gross margin increased from 31.18% in 2010 to 40.73% in 2011. As the gross margin increased, Marathon Oil passes.

  1. Asset Turnover

The formula for the asset turnover ratio evaluates how well a company is utilizing its assets to produce revenue.

The numerator of the asset turnover ratio formula shows revenues found on a company's income statement and the denominator shows total assets, which is found on a company's balance sheet. Total assets should be averaged over the period of time that is being evaluated.

  • Sales growth - 2010 sales = $12.873 billion

  • Sales growth - 2011 sales = $15.282 billion

  • 18.71% sales increase

  • Total Assets - 2010 = $50.014 billion

  • Total Assets - 2011 = $31.371 billion

  • Equals an decrease of 37.28%

As the sales growth exceeded the asset growth, this implies that the company is producing revenue on its assets. Marathon Oil passes.

Based on the nine tests that Marathon Oil received on profitability, debt and capital, and operating efficiency, the company achieved eight passes, out of nine - this is an excellent grade for financial health. Marathon Oil did not pass the working capital aspect of the test. As the company did not pass the working capital aspect of the test this implies that the company did not have as much liquidity as it did a year ago. This is one aspect of the company to watch moving forward. Overall, the company is showing excellent results regarding financial health.

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Mayo Clinic researchers have found a way to detect and eliminate potentially troublemaking stem cells to make stem cell therapy safer. Induced Pluripotent Stem cells, also known as iPS cells, are bioengineered from adult tissues to have properties of embryonic stem cells, which have the unlimited capacity to differentiate and grow into any desired types of cells, such as skin, brain, lung and heart cells. However, during the differentiation process, some residual pluripotent or embryonic-like cells may remain and cause them to grow into tumors.

"Pluripotent stem cells show great promise in the field of regenerative medicine; however, the risk of uncontrolled cell growth will continue to prevent their use as a therapeutic treatment," says Timothy Nelson, Ph.D., M.D., lead author on the study, which appears in the October issue of STEM CELLS Translational Medicine.

Using mouse models, Mayo scientists overcame this drawback by pretreated stem cells with a chemotherapeutic agent that selectively damages the DNA of the stem cells, efficiently killing the tumor-forming cells. The contaminated cells died off, and the chemotherapy didn't affect the healthy cells, Dr. Nelson says.

"The goal of creating new therapies is twofold: to improve disease outcome with stem cell-based regenerative medicine while also ensuring safety. This research outlines a strategy to make stem cell therapies safer for our patients while preserving their therapeutic efficacy, thereby removing a barrier to translation of these treatments to the clinic," says co-author Alyson Smith, Ph.D.

Stem cell therapies continue to be refined and improved. Researchers are finding that stem cells may be more versatile than originally thought, which means they may be able to treat a wider variety of diseases, injuries and congenital anomalies. Stem cell therapy is an emerging regenerative strategy being studied at Mayo Clinic.

"By harnessing the potential of regenerative medicine, we'll be able to provide more definitive solutions to patients," says Andre Terzic, M.D., Ph.D., co-author and director of Mayo Clinic's Center for Regenerative Medicine.

Body Image and Eating Disorders | Treatment Centers | Drug Rehab ...

Girls who don?t gauge their own weight status properly run a greater risk of developing an eating disorder. These young women are not just dissatisfied with their appearance, they misjudge it entirely.

Knowing that it is a distorted self-perception rather than personal dissatisfaction which marks the normal or underweight girl as in danger of an eating disorder is helpful in terms of screening for the illness. Especially in today?s obesity-minded culture, doctors are usually open with young girls and parents about the risks of over-weight, but attention also needs to be given to teens of lower weight who reveal a body-image problem.

Feeling unhappy about the way you look or the shape of your body is not the same thing as having a poor body image. Since somewhere between 50 and 80 percent of American women express dissatisfaction with their body, a more precise indicator is needed. New research on the subject, gathered from a longitudinal survey of over 5,000 teenage girls with no obvious weight problem (their body mass index, or BMI, was lower than 85 percent), could lead the way to more precise screening.

Using a sample of this large subject pool, researchers compared girls? true weight status with their perceived weight status. Girls who gauged themselves as overweight, but who actually were not, were tagged as having a distorted body image.

The study team then employed analysis techniques to forecast how a distorted body image would impact the girls? behaviors, particularly in terms of diet, exercise and drastic weight loss measures like using laxatives or purging. By tracking the subjects to the one year mark, the researchers discovered that girls with a wrong body image who begin using drastic and unhealthy weight loss techniques are more than 10 times as likely to still be using those behaviors a year later.

The study found no link between a distorted body image and excessive exercise as a weight loss tactic. While a tiny percentage of girls do develop an addiction to exercise for weight loss, in the majority of cases exercise promotes a healthy approach to improved mood and self-perception.

The study highlights the importance of catching distorted body image thinking in young girls before they begin to choose unhealthy eating and extreme dieting. Once that thinking and behavior takes hold, it becomes quite difficult to break. To proactively guard against this risk, girls need reinforcement in understanding that bodies are vessels for the person inside, help in focusing on their personal strengths and a supportive atmosphere that focuses on health rather than numbers on a scale.

Some families may need to get rid of the bathroom scale entirely. Parents can help their young and teenaged daughters by cultivating positive life habits such as balanced eating, regular exercise, and correct talk about physical appearance. Good habits may be hard to form, but bad habits are hard to break.

Product Placement: Coming Soon to a Book Near You

Big Macs and Whoppers vying to become integrated plot devices in fiction novels?

Cans of Dr. Pepper defining compelling character arcs in YA/tween fantasy?

Hip, young, internet-aware fiction characters using the nutritional and manufacturing advice on corporate web sites to argue their choice of everything from fast food to underwear?

Pizza Hut Chicken Dunkers laid as the irresistible bait to ensnare fantasy creatures possessing a sense of taste so heightened they can spot a tasty and nutritious meal a mile away?

Wise old mythical sages having no need to resort to the handy calorie counters to know just how ?So Good? for you KFC Tower Burgers really are?

Sounds far-fetched, I know. Scary, even. Middle Earth with Golden Arches. Narnia with a drive-thru. Harry Potter collecting Horcruxes and two-for-one McDonald?s coupons. Scarier, in fact, than the scariest fiction. Art imitating reality imitating art imitating? well, you get the idea.

But will it happen? Modern, streetwise, identifiable characters fighting all manner of evil? whilst sipping a refreshing glass of Ocean Spray Orange Juice and eating a satisfying bowl of Cap?n Crunch that stays crunchy? even in milk. (How does it do that?)

A nightmarish scenario, I admit, for readers who prefer their cherished childhood memories unbranded and their literature unsullied by the literary equivalent of gaudy advertising hoardings.

Welcome to the brave new world of product placement in books.

Well, the brave new world as I see it in conjunction with a progressive publisher and savvy marketing consultant who think outside the box.

The more you think about it, what other future is there? For marketers and publishers it may yet boil down to a choice: embrace the sea-change or be left behind.

I know, I know. Product placement in books can be a touchy subject, though it is not without precedent.

In 2006 the tween chick-lit novel ?Cathy?s Book: If Found Call?, was published with the spunky protagonist using various specific references to her favorite makeup (?a killer coat of Clinique #11 Black Violet lipstick?) as part of her character development and, by association, the plot the heroine was driving.

Tellingly, the authors Jordan Weisman and Sean Stewart both had backgrounds in marketing as well as being successful fantasy and sci-fi authors.

At the time, Marissa Roth writing for The New York Times noted that ?product placement in books is still relatively rare. The use of even the subtlest of sales pitches, particularly in a book aimed at adolescents, could raise questions about the vulnerability of the readers. Many popular young adult novels, of course, already spread references to brands throughout their pages in series like ?The Gossip Girl? and ?The A-List?, although there are no actual product placement deals.?

And the reason for the lack of advertising and branding deals? In reality, it was at the time largely a question of finding ways to successfully integrate brands into books rather than marketers fretting too much about compromising their ethical standards.

Back in 2006, conventional wisdom held that regular print ads, such as those traditionally found in magazines and newspapers wouldn?t work in books because the gestation cycle of a novel is too long. Marketers felt that books could never be nimble enough in marketing terms to move with a fast-changing market, especially in the tween/young adult demographic.

Moreover, from the perspective of creative integrity and longevity a very specific product reference might date your book along with the sponsor?s products and by association render a corporate image ?stuck in the past?.

But that was over half a decade ago. Fast forward six years and the landscape is changing ? a lot ? but not yet in the integrated way I intend to steer it to ensure creative and commercial viability.

In short, regardless of any ethical concerns, or how you technically achieve it, dropping advertising into books is still a bit, er? clunky. For it to really work, there has to be a way to advertise and brand in books using product placement whilst maintaining creative ? and dare I say it, literary ? integrity.

In fact, from the perspective of a writer, there?s no other way it can work. If creativity in a book is not left intact and compromises a writer?s vision what are you left with? A book that is effectively little more than an extended ad for a product with no creative integrity beyond the gimmicky ?sales hook?. (Trust me, kid?s ain?t buying it.)

In a recent article at Howstuffworks several other product-prominent published works are listed ? works that don?t exactly (ahem) bend over backwards to seamlessly integrate the product into a compelling narrative, to say the least. They just stick the brand in the title and create an activity around it.

An example of titles containing heavy-handed commercialism aimed at a demographic some may feel is too young to be effectively or even ethically sold to include: ?The Hersheys Kisses Addition Book?, ?The M&M?s Brand Chocolate Candies Counting Board?, ?Twizzlers Percentages Book?, ?The Cheerios Christmas Play Book? and ?Skittles Riddles Math?.

As the author noted in the Howstuffworks article: ?After reading these titles, you may be assuming that the companies are merely sponsoring the book and that the content is pretty standard fare ? possibly not even incorporating the product into the content of the book. Think again. In ?The Oreo Cookie Counting Book?, the back cover reads: ?Children will love to count down as ten little OREOs are dunked, nibbled, and stacked one by one? until there are none!??

Not exactly subtle then. And I, for one, am certainly not advocating such heavy-handed branding ? if for no other reason than it can?t inherently achieve deep market penetration. And as the actual story in these titles is negligible anyway, what?s the point?

I suggest an uncompromising middle ground between great writing and responsible, effective advertising; it?s a middle ground marketers have not traditionally been able to reach in books because, as discussed, the lead times in traditional publishing were ? and are ? too long.

The bottom line? The medium doesn?t readily lend itself to creative and effective advertising ? simple as that. Why not? Product placement in books can, and usually does, feel forced or not relevant; something in the equation ?good books = great advertising opportunities?, it seems, always has to give.

Or it used to have to give anyway. Then along came the e-reader!

The Wall Street Journal?s Ron Adner and William Vincent issued a warning to readers who prefer their literature minus full-page ads for everything from iPod?s to tobacco: ?With e-reader prices dropping like a stone and major tech players jumping into the book retail business, what room is left for publishers? profits? The surprising answer: ads. They?re coming soon to a book near you.?

In a recent article on Techcrunch, Paul Carr notes: ?The crux of the argument is this: books are the only word-based medium currently free of advertising (unless you count the pages full of ads for other books at the back of most mass market paperbacks). This isn?t ? as you might think ? because ads kill our enjoyment of literature (many magazines publish fiction surrounded by commercial messages) but rather because until now it?s been difficult to sell ad space in books.?

The article goes on to starkly clarify the future of ads in books as the author sees it, noting with withering humour: ?Electronic books? also allow(s) messages to be tailored to the individual reader? Those reading the Twilight books at the age of 14 can be sold make-up and shoes and all of the other things teenage girls need to attract their very own Edward. Meanwhile, those still reading the books at 35 can be sold cat food. Lots and lots of cat food.?

So then. To paraphrase a well-known advertising slogan, the future?s bright, the future?s digital. Personal ethics and creative concerns aside, a writer wishing to pursue revenue or promotion along with his own personal ?brand awareness? in this market may yet find it increasingly ripe for commercial exploitation, with the old guard ready to sit up and take note of new ideas, concepts and proposals.

And why not? It saves time and money. As Paul Carr points out: ?Publishers are really not geared up to sell ads: they?d have to recruit armies of ad sales people who would be forced to actually sit down and read the novels and historical memoirs and chick-lit-churn-outs that they?d be selling against. Not going to happen.?

What lessons can the aspiring novelist learn from this? Simple. A writer must stump up with a brilliantly written commercial concept that is able to incorporate product placement as an integral part of the plot, action and character development and get hustling with his manuscript.

And if it all sounds a bit too commercially driven and money-minded for literary purists ? far from it. As a novelist my motto is: a good manuscript functions as a serviceable business plan until it is a published novel. And a business plan changes and adapts to professional input and changing market forces ? anyone in business knows that. This input could be from a good editor, ghostwriter or, increasingly, a copywriter hired by a commercial sponsor.

Same difference.

Anyway, I must excuse myself as I have to send off my latest brilliant and innovative all-action, all-adventure YA fantasy manuscript ? but not to agents and publishers. That is so 2011.

I?m sending mine to Pepsico, Yum! Brands and Tricon.

Discover 3Q profit slips, but tops Street view

BOSTON (AP) ? Discover Financial Services says its net income fell 3 percent in its fiscal third quarter, but the result beat Wall Street expectations as credit card use increased and more customers paid off their card balances on time.

Its shares rose 3.6 percent to $38.35 in premarket trading.

The Riverwoods, Ill.-based company on Thursday reported net income of $621 million, or $1.21 per share, for the quarter ended Aug. 31, after paying preferred shareholders. That was down from $642 million, or $1.18 per share, in the year-ago quarter, when Discover had a greater number of common shares outstanding.

The latest quarter's earnings topped the consensus forecast of analysts surveyed by FactSet, who had expected $1.03 per share.

Revenue rose nearly 10 percent to $1.96 billion. Analysts forecast $1.9 billion, on average.

O2 to sell upcoming HTC smartphone without a wall charger, says it's part of a 'simple vision'

In what could be considered a relatively strange move, O2 has announced that an upcoming, unannounced HTC smartphone won't come with a wall charger inside the box. According to the Euro carrier, this idea is part of a "simple vision" in which it wants "to take chargers out of boxes full stop," adding that research has shown more than 70 percent of UK customers don't have the need for such charger as they already own one with the same compatibility. The soon-to-be HTC device will, however, include a USB to micro-USB cable, so not everything will be completely lost. Now O2 didn't give any fruitful details about which HTC handset it'll be using to kick off the program, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out.

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, holds celebratory yard sale with $0.25 games

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, offers select 25-cent titles this week

Google Play crossed a rather significant milestone this morning: something to the tune of 25 billion app downloads. While the accomplishment is weighty enough on its own -- especially given that the store also offers books, music and movies, which aren't included in this tally -- Google is celebrating in symbolic style with a number of apps and games for sale at just $0.25 over the next five days. Among the mix of discounted titles, you'll find publishers such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Runtastic and Full Fat. Not to stop there, shoppers will also discover a curated collection of 25 must-own movies, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and 25 top-selling magazines.

With today's announcement, it was revealed that 675,000 apps and games now live in Google Play -- a healthy increase when compared to 600,000 titles and 20 billion installs just three months ago. As you might expect, Apple still claims the largest selection with 700,000 titles in its App Store, although with such a thin separation between the two, we may see Google Play eclipse its rival in short order.

Apple?s Schiller On #ScratchGate: Aluminum Scratching Is Normal

iphone-5-featureApple SVP of Marketing Phil Schiller has reportedly responded to a customer complaint regarding the scratching border of a black and slate iPhone 5, via an email received by 9to5Mac this morning. Schiller apparently responded to concerns by pointing out that aluminum is naturally subject to scratches, and that minor chips over time are to be expected with the iPhone 5's construction materials.

Cancer researchers show why genetic risks promote breast cancer

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Cancer researchers studying 44 known genetic variants associated with breast cancer have found the way to identify why they increase cancer risk, opening the door to future therapeutic applications based on personalized medicine.

The findings, published online September 24 ahead of print in Nature Genetics, fill a gap that will expand the reach of genetic profiling beyond merely screening, says principal investigator Dr. Mathieu Lupien, a scientist at Ontario Cancer Institute, the research arm of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre at University Health Network. Dr. Lupien, who specializes in epigenetics in cancer, is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Biophysics, University of Toronto.

"Our work has identified the mechanisms altered by genetic risk variants in regions believed for a long time to be 'junk DNA'; that is, DNA outside the genes with no known function -- until now. This moves us one step closer to translating genetic profiling into patient care and advancing personalized cancer medicine," says Dr. Lupien.

"We discovered that genetic variants promoting breast cancer are found in elements with a regulatory role that modulate genes expression," he says. The team discovered the changes affecting the activity of two well known drivers of breast cancer -- the estrogen receptor ESR1 and the transcription factor FOXA1 -- that work together in breast cancer cells.

Dr. Lupien and co-investigator Dr. Jason Moore, a computational biologist at Dartmouth Medical School in Lebanon, New Hampshire, developed a methodology that identified the target of genetic predisposition by merging existing maps of the genome -- one cataloguing predisposition to breast cancer and others annotating the functional components from breast cancer cells.

"The pattern emerged revealing why genetic variants can promote breast cancer" says Dr. Lupien. "The beauty is that our methodology can be applied to any disease with known genetic predispositions. We anticipate it will be of broad benefit to other research."

The study was funded by the National Institutes for Health, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.

Obama: Libya assault 'wasn't just mob action'

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Monday "there's no doubt" that the assault of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans including the U.S. ambassador "wasn't just a mob action" but a sign of extremism in nations lacking stability. His words about the Libya killings were his most specific since the White House called it a "terrorist attack" last week.

"What's been interesting, just this past week, there were these massive protests against these extremists militias that are suspected, maybe, of having been involved in this attack," Obama said during the taping of an interview on ABC's talk show program "The View."

The White House initially said the storming of the consulate attack was a spontaneous assault tied to ongoing protests over a video that ridiculed the Prophet Muhammad, but has since broadened its answer to say an investigation will show what ultimately happened.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama taped the show ? a clear pitch to women voters ? in New York the day before the president addresses the U.N. General Assembly. The interview, a mix of policy, politics and personal tidbits, will air Tuesday. Obama made a solo appearance on "The View" in July 2010, drawing an estimated 6.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen. The first lady appeared on the show in late May, where she discussed family life and the re-election campaign.

Asked if a Mitt Romney presidency would be a disaster, Obama hardly disagreed with the sentiment, replying that the nation can "survive a lot." He added: "The American people don't want to just survive, we want to thrive."

Obama pointed to Romney's assertion that it is fair for a person with a $50,000-a-year income to pay a higher percentage of their earnings in taxes than someone who makes millions from investments. Romney said a low capital gains tax rate encourages economic growth and encourages people to invest.

"I've just got a different vision about how we grow our economy," Obama said, adding that such growth is faster when the middle class is doing well.

Discussing the stresses of the presidency, the first lady described her husband as having an even temperament. "He doesn't have emotional shifts; he's very steady," she said. "I'm one of the few people who can really make him mad."

Asked how, Obama joked: "By being thoroughly unreasonable."

In recalling his hardest day of the last four years, Obama cited the August 2011 downing of a Chinook helicopter by a rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan that killed 30 American troops. Obama later flew to Dover, Del., to pay tribute to the troops.

"It's very raw in those moments and it reminds you that freedom's not free and these families are taking enormous strain and ours troops are making enormous sacrifices," Obama said.

Asked what they will be doing in about five years, Michelle Obama said, "go on a long vacation," adding that she wants to retrace the couple's honeymoon route along California's scenic Route 1.

The president at first objected, saying there is still an election ahead, with a whole set of goals he wants to accomplish in a second term. After the presidency, Obama said, he expects to spend time working with kids.

"I love teaching. I miss teaching," he said. Still, the former law school professor said he is not sure he will return to the classroom.

Instead, he may explore the idea of going around to cities, creating mentorships and "giving young people" a sense of opportunity and possibility, Obama said.

An avid basketball player and occasional coach to his two daughters, Obama was asked what was harder, coaching girls or getting Congress to work.

"No contest," he replied. "The girls? They play like a team."

At Brooklyn Invitational, Disrupting Notions of Motorcycle Culture ...

A send-off to a long, hot summer was orchestrated on Sept. 22, as thousands of motorcyclists descended on the waterfront of North Williamsburg for the Brooklyn Invitational Custom Motorcycle Show. The attendance and variety of motorcycle culture on view further cemented the position of the show, in its fourth year, as among the most important in North America.

But this was no Sturgis or Laconia, those rallies given over to ponytails and patch-covered leather vests. The aesthetic of the Brooklyn Invitational is largely dictated by John Copeland, a fine arts painter; Keino Sasaki, owner of Keino Cycles, a custom bike shop in Brooklyn; and Jeffrey Schad, a professional photographer.

Mr. Copeland said the three started the event in 2008 because there ?was nothing happening on the East Coast, let alone New York City,? that showcased the kinds of design, style and attitude embraced by them and the builders they admired.

?We just were like, ?Why don?t we do it like a gallery show, where it?s like, look, this is the people that we respect, the work that we think is good, and do it in a different context,?? Mr. Copeland said.

The Invitational featured about two dozen builders invited from all over the country. California-based builders on hand included David Freston of Chopper Dave?s Casting Company in Long Beach; Max Schaaf of 4Q Conditioning in Oakland; and Scott Jones of Noise Cycles in Santa Ana, whose impossibly detailed black and gold 1959 pan-shovelhead Harley-Davidson was a crowd favorite.

The scope of the event has grown since its start at an indoor skate park in Greenpoint. Its first year, which featured 12 bikes, drew roughly 2,000 people, Mr. Copeland said. By 2011, attendance swelled to more than 5,000, and in a phone interview on Monday, Mr. Copeland estimated the crowd on Saturday at 10,000. What little money the event makes ? entry is free ? goes toward producing the next year?s Invitational.

?Everybody in here is doing this because they love it and it?s part of their heart and soul,? he added. ?They don?t have a choice. They?re going to do this, or they?re going to do nothing else.?

Held at Root, an expansive photo studio near the waterfront in North Williamsburg, the Invitational is a forum for motorcycle culture of a different stripe. Local bands Endless Boogie and Psychic Limb provided music, and Asahi peddled $3 cans of beer late into the night, without a trace of ZZ Top or Budweiser to be found.

But the centerpiece, unequivocally, was the bikes.

?This event is different than everything else,? said Mr. Freston of Chopper Dave?s, a repeat guest. His 1947 green and cream knucklehead Harley on display was a masterwork of postwar curves and latter-day minimalism.

?They?ve managed to make a bike event that somehow isn?t a bike event,? he added. ?It?s an art deal, but they?ve somehow crossed the two in a way that?s never been done before that works.?

Given its location just a few blocks from Bedford Avenue, the area?s main drag and a catwalk for New York?s postmillennial creatives, the hybrid is not surprising. The show?s tattooed, neatly coiffed attendees would have looked as comfortable in the dive bars and art studios of Bushwick as at a motorcycle show. The women attendees, unlike those at some other bike shows, were fully clothed.

Inside the crisp, white-walled gallery were pristine, hand-customized motorcycles surrounded by photographic prints. For all the fun inspired by bikes, beer and bands, the mood inside was also reverential. Builders discussed their craft before awed admirers, who crouched to get closer views and to snap photos on their mobile phones.

Outside, the cracked streets and sidewalks of the old waterfront, still wild and industrial, were thronged with bikers and their hundreds of bikes, some of which rivaled the machines inside for meticulousness and bravura.

?Three-quarters of this show is happening out on the street right now,? Jeff Wright, from Church of Choppers, in Des Moines, said. Mr. Wright, who also runs a blog of the same name, said he spent hundreds of hours building his bike: a red, white and blue, extended-fork 1979 shovelhead Harley that was a model of simple chopper elegance.

He appreciated the show because he was ?sick and tired? of events in what he described as the ?California? mold. The grittiness of the waterfront, with the sun setting behind Manhattan, was a perfect backdrop for a scrappy motorcycle show.

?That artwork that?s out there, it?s not flowers and green and palm trees,? he said.

'Housewives of NJ' star blows friendship up in finale ...

HollywoodNews.com: ?Real Housewives of New Jersey? star Teresa Giudice ended the season last night on a big note as her friendships and relationships came crumbling down.

Giudice has been struggling throughout the season with the other cast members, but the finale put an end to things as her sister-in-law, Melissa Gorga, was accused of being a stripper in the past, states RadarOnline. Giudice claimed to not be involved in Gorga allegedly being outed, but the man who did the outing claims she was a part of it.

?Kim and Teresa want to blow the whistle on her. They had me do this thing, ya know??Melissa! Wow, I almost didn?t recognize you. You look fabulous!?? Angelo Vrohidis commented.

And if ruining the relationship wasn?t enough, Giudice definitely ended things with Jacqueline Laurita as she accused her of being involved in the stripper fiasco.

?It just blows my frickin? mind how Jacqueline works. Chris has told my husband that he met Jacqueline as a stripper, so maybe she got involved because she has some guilty conscience with the whole stripper past. She?s a fu**in? c**t,? Giudice later said.

What did you think about the finale?

US releases names of 55 Guantanamo detainees

(AP) ? The U.S. Justice Department on Friday made public the names of 55 Guantanamo prisoners who have been approved for transfer to the custody of other countries, releasing information sought by human rights organizations.

The announcement, which reverses a 2009 decision, was a surprise to organizations that had filed FOIA requests seeking the information.

"We did not expect this," said Omar Farah, attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights. "This is an important development."

Farah said the government's action will be a boost for lawyers representing detainees at the U.S. military base in Cuba. "We can now advocate publicly for the release of our clients by name," he said.

The government's move has no immediate, practical effect on the inmates' detention. Inclusion on the list does not mean that the U.S. has absolved them of any wrongdoing or that it believes they pose no threat, and there was no indication of when any might be sent elsewhere.

In 2009, Ambassador Daniel Fried, the Obama administration's special envoy on detainee issues, argued then that it was necessary to keep the prisoners' identities secret while the U.S. negotiated transfers to other countries.

"It is important for the U.S. government to have the latitude to approach potential destination countries in a discreet and confidential manner, in order to minimize the risk of undue publicity," Fried said in a statement at the time.

But the government said in a court filing Friday that the successful transfers of other detainees no longer warranted such concerns. It noted that 40 detainees have been resettled in new countries and 28 were repatriated to their native countries since 2009.

ACLU lawyer Zachary Katznelson welcomed the naming of 55 prisoners approved for transfers, saying it could help speed up their release to another country. "Their lawyers can publicly push for their transfer," he said.

But he urged the government to release the names of 31 other detainees also approved for transfer.

"Today's release is a partial victory for transparency, and it should also be a spur to action," he said. "These men have now spent three years in prison since our military and intelligence agencies all agreed they should be released."

Katznelson said the ACLU has also filed an FOIA request seeking the names of prisoners in three other categories: indefinite detention, conditional detention and prosecution.

Suzanne Nossel, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said the 55 detainees named should be transferred immediately out of Guantanamo.

"Indefinite detention is a human rights violation and it must end," she said.

Most of the detainees on the list are from Yemen, including Mohammed Al-Hamiri, whom Farah represents.

Farah said more than one-third of Guantanamo's prisoners are men from Yemen who have been cleared for transfer. Currently, the U.S. will not move any Yemeni detainees back to their home country because the U.S. believes it is not stable enough to prevent them from potentially resuming militant activity.

There are 167 detainees now at Guantanamo.

Wal-Mart waves goodbye to entire Amazon Kindle line

Following in Target's footsteps, Wal-Mart has announced it will no longer sell Amazon Kindle e-readers and Amazon Kindle Fire tablets.?

By Matthew Shaer / September 20, 2012

Wal-Mart will no longer sell the Amazon Kindle e-reader, pictured here, nor the Kindle Fire tablet line.

Back in May, Target announced it would stop selling Amazon Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets. Now, several months later, Wal-Mart has followed suit, booting the Kindle line, which includes a range of Fire and Kindle devices, from outlets across the country.?

"We have recently made the business decision to not carry Amazon tablets and eReaders beyond our existing inventory and purchase commitments," Wal-Mart said in an internal memo obtained by Reuters. "This includes all Amazon Kindle models current and recently announced."

So what's behind the shift? Well, a healthy sense of competition, mostly. Consider: Wal-Mart sells a range of household and homegoods products. Amazon used to be just a big bookseller, but in recent years it has become a bookseller that also sells television sets and food products and even deodorant. That's threatening to Wal-Mart and Target.?

"I think part of it could be margin, though the bigger point is that Wal-Mart and Target view Amazon as a competitor,"?Scott Tilghman, an analyst at Caris & Company, told Reuters. (It's worth noting that neither Wal-Mart nor Target has officially commented on the reason for removing the Kindle line from stores; Amazon, for its part, is staying mum.)

Earlier this month, at an event in Santa Monica, Kindle CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled?a new line of?Kindle Fire?tablets and a backlit e-reader called the?Kindle Paperlight. Generally speaking, critics have been pleased with the new Kindle Fires, and especially the 7-inch HD model. Writing in Gizmodo, Kyle Wagner said he found the tablet "impressive." The modified Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system? Less so.?

"[A]fter using Jelly Bean on the Nexus 7, it's just impossible to go back to [the Fire] without it feeling horribly slow and laggy," Wagner wrote. "How bad is it? It's bad enough that when you tap an icon, you wonder if you did it wrong, if maybe you didn't tap firmly enough."
